Bringing Movement, Connection and Community To Life Through Film
by a freelance photographer and videographer
As a freelance photographer and videographer working across Suffolk, Surrey, London, Norfolk and anywhere a great story needs telling,
I recently had the privilege of working with Karen Louise dance CIC on a heartwarming commission that reminded me exactly why I love to do what I do.
Karen runs a range of inclusive uplifting dance sessions from chair yoga, adult movers to mini movers and
she wanted a promo video and social content that truly captures the joy connection and meaning these classes bring to people's lives.
A wholesome story worth sharing
From the very first session it was clear this wasn't just exercise, it was community. The same faces turned up for multiple
classes, moving at their own pace, knowing they were safe and welcome. You could feel the trust in the room
and it was deeply moving. And I think this speaks volumes about the sense of community Karen has cultivated.
Karen's beautiful vision was to create a hero video and a series of short form clips that would reflect the true
emotional impact of her sessions. The goal wasn't just to show what the classes looked like, but to capture
how they make people feel. It was important that the content reflects the joy, connection and freedom that
participants experience during each session. We agreed early on that the best way to do this was to
document all of the classes and build a narrative around real stories and real reactions.
With true honesty, I have to say I did shed a few tears while filming.
There was just so much joy, energy and smiles, capturing that energy on camera felt like a real honor.
The style and approach was documentary observational non-intrusive and focused on natural candid moments.
We also decided it was best to get some vox pops so we set up some interviews,
sharing what these sessions mean to them personally and make that the backbone of the video.
When it came to graphics, I wanted to add some simple motion graphics to Karen's logo.
I loved the simplicity of it and decided on animating the box which helped confirm to the audience who this is.
I then carried that through for the end titles while mentioning contact details, classes,
location and a special thanks to Ipswich Borough Council for funding. It is important to keep things consistent.
An emotional experience
Everyone involved was generous with their time and energy and the interviews bought such depth to the visuals.
Participants talked openly about how these classes help them with mental health, mobility and confidence.
Some spoke of finding friendships and a renewed sense of community.
