Documentary Video Coverage of the #iwillmovement
Youth Event at DanceEast, Ipswich.
Capturing Young Voices in Action
By an event photographer and videographer working across Suffolk, London, Surrey and beyond.
Working with purpose led organisations is always a joy and this recent project with
Volunteering Matters in partnership with the #Iwillmovement was one of
those jobs that stays with you long after the cameras stop rolling.
I was invited to document theDeliver You Hack event at DanceEast in Ipswich, a day built around empowering
young people to speak up and share what matters most of them and bringing together these brilliant young minds to reimagine services for their community.
What Is The #Iwillmovement?
The #Iwillmovement is about giving young people a platform, helping them express their ideas, passions
and solutions for the world around them. Whether through conversation, creativity or community action it’s about turning voice into impact.
Deliver You Hack was a space created exactly for that.
My Role On The day As A Videographer
I was commissioned to create a short hero film and a series of social videos that were to reflect the heart of the event led by young people,
centered on their voice and driven by the energy of collaboration.
Here's are the key things I captured.
Young people in action, collaborating, drawing, sharing ideas.
Facilitated workshops and table tasks
Voxpox and talking head interviews with both young people and adults.
Group presentations on issues that matter to them.
My main focus? Ensuring the young people were the loudest voices in the room, not literally but emotionally.
The adults involved offered guidance and support, but I wanted to be intentional about keeping the camera and the narrative on the youth perspective.
Real Topics, Real Passion, Real Impact
Throughout the day, each table worked towards a shared presentation. After rich discussions and idea sharing, each group selected a topic
to present in any format they wanted, creatively, through speech, artwork, even performance.
One standout moment for me was a group who shared a poem. Powerful, honest and beautifully written. As soon as I saw their presentation
I knew I was going to include this in the film. And I used a part of it to open the hero video as it captured the whole tone of the day in just a few lines.
Another group did a performance which, there were drawings and talks. After each presentation it was led into feedback from a panel,
who offered encouragement, insight and genuine praise. It was beautiful to witness how much confidence that feedback gave the young presenters
Creating The Final Videos
I was given full creative control over the event videos, which is always exciting.
I created three short videos in addition to the main hero film.
One was using the words they use to describe the event. This was a short edit
focused on the keywords participants used to describe the day,
either during the chats with me or when at the end of the day one of the facilitators
ran around the room and recorded a single word from each table.
The second, moments in motion, a fast-paced visual piece blending stills and video
in a triptych, energetic style to capture the days dynamic energy.
The third was the ideas they shared, a showcase of the written notes, drawings and
sketches from all the tables. A visual way to honour each voice and viewpoint.
Final Thoughts
Projects like this are exactly why I do what I do. It's not just about beautiful visuals, it is about creating something that has meaning,
that makes someone feel seen, and that contributes to a stronger community.
To be trusted to tell these stories and to witness young people speak with passion, creativity
and clarity is something I will always be grateful for. Get in touch if you’re looking for creative, documentary-style photography
