Documenting Real Connection in A Big Family
Rain, dogs, trees and laughter.
This relaxed family photo shoot in Ipswich, Suffolk is a perfect example of why I always encourage families not to fear imperfect weather.
What started as a very rainy morning turned into something quietly beautiful. Full of connection, laughter and those inbetween moments that matter most.
As a family photographer, I focus on natural documentary style family photography. Capturing families and people across Surrey, London, Surrey
and anywhere I am needed! My sessions are calm, flexible and built around real life, not forced smiles or rigid posing.
A Rainy Morning Family Photo Shoot
When I woke up that morning, the rain was heavy enough that rescheduling was briefly on the table. But with how rare it is for the whole family to be together at the same time,
everyone agreed it was worth giving it a go. Especially when trying to organise 19 people and 2 dogs! Wrapped up in coats and armed with umbrellas everyone was ready to go!
I turned up early to make sure we had atleast one spot sheltered under the trees, somewhere we could pause, regroup and stay dry if needed.

Within about fifteen minutes, the rain softened and then stopped completely.
The sun came out just enough to give us that fresh, just after rain light that always feels a little bit special.
Using Familiar Locations for Natural Family Photos
This location in Ipswich was chosen because it was familiar to the family, somewhere they already felt comfortable. That sense of ease makes such a difference, especially when children are involved.
We made use of a fallen tree to sit everyone together, which naturally helped balance heights between little ones and adults. It also gave everyone something to do rather than just standing still, which instantly relaxed the energy.

These small choices are intentional, they help sessions feel grounded, comfortable and genuinely enjoyable.
A Mix of Gentle Group Photos and Natural Moments
We started with a few more traditional family group photos, nothing overly formal, just everyone together with plenty of laughing, face pulling,
tickles and real expressions. From there, we went for a relaxed walk around the area.

Walking sessions are one of my favourite ways to photograph families. They give space for chatting, playing and natural interaction while
I quietly document what unfolds. No pressure. No expectations. Just time together.

Family Photography That Feels Calm and Real
My approach to family photography is simple. Let things unfold naturally. I'll guide gently when needed, but mostly I'm there to observe and capture the connectuon thats already there.

These sessions are ideal for families who want photos that feel honest. Images that reflect real relationships rather than a perfect version of them.
